Renault Sport chooses the Bridgestone Potenza RE050A for Megane RS Trophy

Renault Sport has chosen the UHP Bridgestone Potenza RE050A tyre in 235/35 R19 format as original equipment for Mégane R.S. Trophy.

This limited edition of 500 cars delivers 265 hp and 360 Nm of torque. From the moment of its introduction, Mégane R.S. Trophy has shown unrivalled sporting performance in its category, without any sacrifice of versatility or comfort. This new version of Mégane Renault Sport has been on the market since 20th June 2011.

On 17th June 2011, on the legendary Nürburgring circuit, and more specifically on the Nordschleife (northern loop), Renault Mégane R.S. Trophy set a new lap record in the front-wheel drive category, where cars must conform strictly to production specifications.
By setting a lap time of 8' 08", Mégane R.S. Trophy beat the record held since 2008 by Mégane R26.R, which was 8' 17".

Laurent Hurgon, the Renault Sport development driver, said: “The Nordschleife is a legendary course, unique in terms of its length, technicality and design, which is very different from a traditional circuit.” He added: “The carefully-tuned Cup chassis, the dampers, the Recaro seats, the power of the 265hp engine, the ready availability of torque between 2,500 and 5,000 rpm and the car’s Bridgestone RE050A (235/35 R19) tyres allowed me to make the most of the car’s enormous potential, especially into and out of the corners.”

The Potenza RE050A, an ultra-high performance tyre, was designed to handle the power of an engine delivering more than 265hp, like that of Mégane R.S. Trophy. Its asymmetric design, derived from Formula 1, gives balanced dynamic performance with great responsiveness, particularly on cornering, precise steering and a high level of safety on wet surfaces. The Potenza RE050A allows Mégane R.S. Trophy to reveal its sporty spirit, versatility and comfort.

It was in 2004, when the B250 was chosen as original equipment for the Modus, that Bridgestone became a supplier of tyres for Renault vehicles in Europe. The volume of OEM tyres supplied to Renault has kept growing ever since. Today, various models from the Bridgestone range are found on the Clio, Fluence, Scénic, Modus, Kangoo, Wind, Laguna GT and, of course, Mégane.

“This prestigious new sporting partnership with Renault is a source of great pride for Bridgestone”, said Didier Schneider, Vice President OE Sales Bridgestone Europe. “The Potenza RE050A offers essential qualities that are perfectly suited to the highly sporty temperament of the Mégane R.S. Trophy. The record set at Nürburgring proves that the combination is very well matched and in perfect balance.”
