Bridgestone tyres perform strongly in the latest summer tyre tests conducted by the European motoring press. ADAC Motorwelt places Potenza RE050A top of the list of high-performance tyres with the maximum 3-star “very recommendable” rating. Auto Zeitung picks out the new eco-friendly Turanza ER300 ECOPIA for achieving a successful balance between safety and rolling resistance.

Very well balanced and highly recommendable” (ADAC)

The German, Austrian and Swiss motoring clubs (ADAC, ÔAMTC and TCS) carried out their annual summer-tyre comparative tests in two sizes: 19 brands in the mid-range 185/65 R15H size and 17 in the high performance 225/45 R17W/Y size.

The Potenza RE050A topped the hi-spec list with the highest “very recommendable” 3-star ranking. Europe’s largest motoring magazine goes on to cite the Potenza as “a very well balanced summer tyre” with highest notes on dry handling.

“Good balance between safety and rolling resistance” (Auto Zeitung)

Bridgestone’s new Turanza ER300 ECOPIA was also awarded the “very recommendable” badge by Auto Zeitung in comparative tests of 10 brands in size 205/55 R16V. The results show how the Turanza ER300 ECOPIA with reduced rolling resistance still manages to achieve high levels of grip. “Not many of the tested tyres find a good compromise between safety and rolling resistance, but certainly Turanza ER300 ECOPIA is one of the two that achieves this” comments Auto Zeitung.

Ranked 3rd out of 10 across all criteria, the Turanza ER300 ECOPIA is judged by Auto Zeitung to be “fast and secure on the wet with high reserves for aquaplaning” and achieves “good results on all properties related to safety criteria. A very well balanced tyre.”

The mid-priced Firestone brand was also included in the ADAC test of 36 tyres. Both the Firestone TZ300α (185/65 R15H) and Firehawk SZ90µ (tested in hi-spec 225/45 R17W/Y) were awarded 2 stars and labelled “recommendable” with high notes on dry handling.

Safety risk of low-price tyres

The latest ADAC tests confirm again the poor performance of cheap tyres. This is particularly noticeable in the wet, where the difference in braking distances between the best performers and worst low-price performers alarms ADAC: “potentially making the difference between life and death”. The magazine classifies two low-price brands in the mid-range size as “not recommendable” and cites five “not recommendable” in the hi-spec size tests, with one tyre “unacceptable”.
