Bridgestone tyre selected for Audi A1

AUDI AG has selected Bridgestone’s new flagship ultra high-performance sport tyre, Potenza S001, as original equipment for the new Audi A1.

Deliveries of size 225/35 R18 87W for the premium 3-door compact started in September 2010.

Audi A1 is the fourth fitment contract for Potenza S001 since its launch in February 2010. The tyre has already been chosen for the Audi RS5, Aston Martin Rapide and Ferrari 458 Italia.

Precision and response of Potenza S001

“Bridgestone is proud to have met the demanding performance targets set by Audi” says Mr Didier Schneider, Vice President Original Equipment, Bridgestone Europe. “The sharp response and precision of the Potenza S001 complements the sporty characteristics of the Audi A1.”

Bridgestone designed the Potenza S001 to provide maximum sporty performance for top sports cars and high-powered luxury cars. The innovative asymmetric design features stiff ‘high grip’ shoulder blocks enhanced by a lightweight active insert in the bead area, delivering quick-fire response and precise handling.

The inner tread area is tuned for safety with Bridgestone’s premium wet pattern technology. The tyre also has a lighter belt construction and lower rolling resistance than previous Potenza generations, helping to increase fuel efficiency.

Top tyre test results

The Potenza S001 has already been singled out in tyre tests by the German motoring press. Sport Auto magazine declared the S001 “test winner” and the new “wet performance benchmark” in its 2010 test of 11 leading UHP tyre brands.

Auto Zeitung also tested the S001 in 2010 and awarded it the top classification of “highly recommendable”, citing the Potenza’s “balanced performance” and “precise steering”.

Auto Motor Sport magazine came to a similar conclusion in its report published on 9th March 2011: “Potenza S001 is very recommendable” reports Auto Motor Sport. “Very good driving and braking performance on dry; good driving performance on wet […] The Bridgestone Potenza shines due to excellent braking and driving behaviour on dry; and also on wet it scores a lot of points due to its easy control up to the limit.”

Bridgestone has been supplying original equipment tyres to Audi in Europe since 1992. In addition to the Audi A1, current Bridgestone-fitted models include the Audi S3, Audi S6 and RS5.
